Thank you for choosing an exchange semester or year at one of our universities. In addition to the organization of your studies, it is probably the question of affordable accommodation that you would like to have clarified most urgently before your arrival.
We rent rooms in shared flats to exchange students. By living in a shared flat, you will make new contacts and quickly find your way around in your area. Our rents (usually incl. electricity, water, heating and internet) for the residences listed below are between 280,00 € and 320,00 € plus a monthly program fee (40,00 € - 80,00 €), which varies depending on the duration of your stay.
A total of five dormitories in Essen, Duisburg and Mülheim are available to you. The allocation of the rooms is done by the dormitory administration.
Easy and uncomplicated to move in
All our rooms are furnished. This means that you do not have to carry heavy furniture or buy it especially for your exchange. Our basic equipment includes a bed with mattress, a desk and chair, a mobile container, a wardrobe and a shelf. Your room also includes a shared kitchen with stove and refrigerator, shared bathroom with toilet and shower and a washing centre in the basement.
In your luggage you should have the following: Bed linen, towels, kitchen utensils, cooking utensils, cutlery and technical equipment (telephone, WLAN router). These items are not part of the basic equipment! However, you can also purchase many of the listed items at a reasonable price in Germany. Our tutors in student residences will be happy to help you in this regard.
We also offer other practical extras: common rooms, caretaker service, parking places, bicycle cellar and much more!
For the application procedure you need a valid certificate of enrollment, Program confirmation or a letter of invitation from the university or college.
Fill out the online application and indicate the preferred place of residenceand the desired moving in date (only the first day of each month is possible). Once your application has been successfully sent, you will receive an automatic e-mail confirmation and further information.
Note: You can also apply for several locations. To do this, log in with your user data and create another application with your existing profile.
As soon as a matching room is available, we will e-mail you a room offer and your personal authentication code.
Proceed with the authentification by uploading your passport/ID in the online portal and accept the room offer by transfering a reservation fee. The fee will be booked as a deposit at the beginning of the rental period.
Please note the given deadline. After expiry of this period, the offer is no longer available.
After we have received the reservation fee, you will get the rental contract from us by e-mail. The first rent is to be paid in accordance with the rental agreement. Please always check all e-mail folders (spam, unknown, etc.) for incoming e-mails.
Please send all necessary documents and the signed rental agreement by post to the responsible administrator within the stated period.
Whether it's enrolment at the university, semester planning or living: International students have a lot to do before and after their arrival in the region. To make it as easy as possible for you to start as a tenant in our dormitories, we have summarised the most important information for you here before and after your arrival at the place of study.
Who can apply?
Students of the University of Duisburg-Essen, Folkwang University of the Arts and Ruhr West University of Applied Sciences can apply for a room.
External students can also apply for a place in student accommodation. However, these applications are not given priority.
How can I apply?
If you have received your admission document, you can apply for a room on our online portal. We show you how to do this here.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to apply without a valid enrolment document or admission letter.
Applicants for degree programmes that are not subject to admission restrictions can apply without an admission letter.
Is there a deadline for applications?
No. You can generally apply any time after enrolling successfully or receiving an admission letter. However, the sooner we receive your application, the better chance you will have.
Rooms are rented out all year round. The tenancy agreements generally begin at the start of the semester, e.g. 01.03/01.04 or 01.09./01.10 of a year.
What criteria are used for allocating places?
We process applications in the order they arrive. Please note that we do not have a waiting list for specific residences. The sooner you contact us, the better your chances of being allocated the accommodation of your choice.
How long are the waiting times?
We cannot make any general statements about how long you will have to wait for accommodation, as it depends on many different factors. In past years, we have always been able to find a room for every student within a short space of time.
What happens if I turn down an offer of a room?
If this is the case, your application will no longer be considered. You can simply apply again at a later time.
Can I also apply for a single apartment?
Unfortunately, not. For program students we only have rooms available in a shared apartment. Generally, our single apartments are in very high demand and are therefore only available to students who are staying with us for a long time.
Living in a shared flat has its advantages: You can make new contacts right away and get valuable tips for studying in the area.
Can I also apply for several locations?
Yes, you can also apply for several locations. All you have to do is register with your user data in the online portal and create a new application with your existing profile.
I don't have a visa yet. What can I do?
In order to conclude a contract, we primarily need a copy of the first page of your identity card or passport. Please submit your visa/ your residence permit immediately after your arrival.
As soon as you have this document, please upload it to the online portal.
Note: In the event that you do not receive a visa and are unable to study in Germany, the rental agreement concluded with us is legally valid. You can only terminate it within the periods stated in the contract.
Where can I find my tenant ID?
You find this for e.g. in our letters on the letterhead "Identnummer" or in the reservation confirmation.
Why do I have to pay a reservation fee?
The 700,00 € reservation fee is required as a security for STUDIERENDENWERK. After you move in, this fee will be counted as a deposit. In accordance with the terms of the tenancy agreement, the deposit will be returned to you around eight weeks after tenancy ends, provided that you leave your room in clean and tidy condition.
Note: Separate conditions apply to our dormitory in Bülowstraße 51-55, Mülheim. The reservation fee is 1041,00 € and will be refunded at the earliest 10 weeks after the end of the rental period.
Why do I have to pay additional fees to rent?
For program students, a flat rate is charged in addition to the rent, which varies depending on the length of the rental period. In general, the longer you stay with us, the lower the fee will be. Reasons for such an additional fee are, among others, the high administrative costs and a certain vacancy rate that arises with short term contracts.
Can the reservation fee also be paid by a third person?
Yeah, that's not a problem. Please make sure that you state your tenant ID and first and last name in the transfer purpose. You will always find your tenant ID on our letterhead.
Where do I transfer the reservation fee (IBAN and BIC)?
You have to transfer the deposit within the specified period to:

IBAN and BIC: These details can be found in your reservation confirmation (page two) or in gerneral in the footer of our letters.
Reference: Your tenant ID. You find this for e.g. in our letters on the letterhead "Identnummer" or in the reservation confirmation.
Any fees that may arise in connection with a foreign bank transfer must be paid by you.
What can I do if I cannot pay the reservation fee/deposit?
You have two options. On the one hand there is the possibility to pay the deposit in installments or on the other hand someone can vouch for you.
The lump sum must be paid in any case as it serves as security on our part.
How do I pay my rent?
After receipt of the rental agreement you have to transfer the first rent to the bank account of the STUDIERENDENWERK with your tenant ID. The bank details are identical according to the reservation fee.
After your arrival at the university location you should immediately open a current account at a German bank, as we collect the rent by SEPA direct debit mandate. You can find the necessary form to fill out here. The rent is then automatically collected by us on the third working day of every month.
