Information

For guest scientists or lecturers we offer a guest house in Essen. It is located directly on the campus of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE).

The apartments in our guest house are fully furnished and equipped. They have a fully equipped kitchen, TV, internet access, washing machine and dryer for shared use.

Renting in our guest houses is only possible on a monthly basis (i.e. from the first day of the month to the last day of the month). The maximum rental period is one year. Since the contracts are valid for a fixed period of time, they cannot be terminated.

To rent, please download and complete the registration form by right-clicking (save destination as ...). If you have any questions about the rental process, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Important note: Until further notice, no new tenancy agreements will be concluded for the guesthouse in Duisburg.

Application and process

Rental by guests

For rental, please fill out the registration form on our website and send it to us by e-mail.

If an apartment is available in the requested period, you will receive a confirmation e-mail from us.

The following payments are required for a binding reservation:

  • Rent for the first month (500,00 € single apartment / 750,00 € double apartment)
  • Deposit (500,00 € single apartment / 750,00 € double apartment)

Note: Cancellation is possible for a fee of 100,00 € up to one month before the start of the rental period.

After we have received the rental and deposit payment, we will send you the rental agreement by e-mail. The rental agreement must be printed out and signed in the grey field.

Send the signed original contract by post to:

Studierendenwerk Essen-Duisburg AöR
Reckhammerweg 1
45141 Essen
Germany

After we have received the signed rental contract, we will send you the following documents by post:

  • Rental agreement (signed by both parties)
  • The schedule and the access data for handing over the keys
  • The direct debit authorization as blank form (please note the deadline in the cover letter)
  • Landlord's confirmation of residence
  • A welcome folder with all important information about the guest house

The direct debit authorization form must be sent back to the dormitory administration in due time by e-mail (PDF), stating the IBAN, BIC and SWIFT. It is a condition of the contract that the rent can be debited from a bank account that is part of the SEPA direct debit scheme. Any fees incurred for bank transfers, return debits, etc. must be paid by yourself.

If there are difficulties with debiting a foreign account, a current account must be opened with a German bank. Non-EU citizens are generally required to open an account with a German bank.

The following documents are usually required to open a bank account:

  • Passport/ID
  • Landlord’s confirmation of residence

The move-in and move-out will be organized by the caretaker responsible for the guest house. For moving in, the apartment key is deposited in a key safe, so that you can move in independently of the working hours of the caretaker. You will receive the access data for the safe by e-mail a few days before the start of the rental period.

The move out incl. inspection of the apartment will be made personally by the responsible caretaker. To do this, the responsible property manager of the guesthouse must be contacted directly by you. You can find the contact details on our website.

It can take up to eight weeks for the deposit to be refunded after the end of the tenancy agreement. Please keep your German account active until this has happened.

If you are staying in Essen or Duisburg for more than 90 days, you have to register at your city's Residents' Registration Office (EU countries) or Foreigners' Registration Office (non-EU countries), depending on your residence status.

For the appointment you usually need:

  • Landlord’s confirmation of residence

  • Passport/ID
